This is Will Oldham’s astonishing 15^th entry (give or take, including collaborations) from the ‘Prince’ stable since 1999’s seminal I See A Darkness and in many respects Wolfroy Goes To Town mines similar sonic terrain with the bearded burbler tracking a series of meditative folk musings with a world-weary view. Downcast in the vocal throughout much of the record, our self-effacing narrator roams a dejected path filled with off-centre characters such as God-fearing zealots (‘No Match’), to his own murky self (‘New Whaling’).
